The Perth Postels are just one of several returning teams, including the Corner Tigers, Lamma CC (Hong Kong), Applecross Postels (Australia) and the CBBs to this year’s Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2007 being played at the freshly returfed Karon Stadium from 19th–22nd April. Nineteen teams will compete for honours in Cup, Plate, Bowl and Spoon divisions over four days, culminating in Finals day on Sunday 22nd April. This year’s line up of teams is very strong and includes several overseas teams competing in Phuket for the first time this year include the Shanghai Devilrays (China), Singapore Airlines (Singapore), and the Joondalup Wolves (Australia). Local teams from the Phuket Cricket Union leagues will also be in the mix and include the Green Man Gunnas, Laguna, Island Cricketeers and the Karon Seasanders. “We’re very happy with the line up of teams this year, which includes sides from India, Pakistan, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, and Australia as well as Thailand, ” commented Mr Michael ‘Cat’ Maher, Chairman of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour. “It’s a wonderful array of teams from all around the world and demonstrates the pull that Phuket has as a growing sports tourism destination and the popularity of the Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes as a tournament,” continued Mr Maher. The popular Phuket Sixes won two major awards from the International Cricket Council last year for contributing to the development of cricket in Asia. The Phuket Sixes embraces the motto ‘fun in the sun’ and seeks to encourage friendly competition and participation in cricket at all levels of ability. A session of Beach Cricket at Karon Beach on Wednesday afternoon gets competitors and supporters in the mood for the tournament ahead, which also features a Players Party at The Green Man and a lavish Awards Dinner at the Hilton Arcadia Resort on Sunday night. A special Twenty20 Charity match featuring all of the best players in the tournament will be played under floodlights at Karon Stadium on Saturday 21st from 6pm to raise funds for local children’s charity Childwatch. Former Australian Test player Trevor Chappell will captain one side, and the Sixes celebrity and former South African professional cricketer Kenny Jackson will skipper the other side. Spectators are most welcome to see this entertaining match and entrance is free. Matches will be played on the new lush green outfield at Karon Stadium, laid last month and funded by the Rotary Club of Patong Beach.
