MEDIA RELEASE

15th April 2007

Newly turfed outfield at Karon Stadium provides lush green playing surface for the Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2007

Organisers of this week’s Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes (19th–22nd April) are looking forward to the tournament being played on the newly turfed outfield at the Karon Stadium.

“The new green turf outfield looks fantastic,” commented Tournament Director, Mr Brad Tarr of the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour.

“I’m sure the players are all going to appreciate the upgrading of the playing surface for the Sixes,” Mr Tarr continued.

Phuket Sixes organisers have been working to have the sports field at Karon Stadium returfed ever since the first Phuket Sixes was staged at the stadium in 2004, particularly following severe damage to the outfield caused by the Boxing Day tsunami. Organisers have for the last several months been liaising with officials of The Rotary Club of Patong Beach to bring the returfing plan to fruition in time for this year’s Sixes tournament.

“We’re very grateful to The Rotary Club of Patong Beach for funding and providing the new outfield at Karon Stadium, and officers of the Karon Municipality,” said Sixes Event Director Ms Poonpun Jangrugsa of The Green Man.

The Montpelier Phuket International Cricket Sixes 2007 gets underway on Thursday 19th April at Karon Stadium at 9.30am and runs through daily until finals day on Sunday 22nd.

A lavish Awards Dinner for all the teams and officials will be held on Sunday evening at the Hilton Arcadia Resort.

A Twenty20 Charity Match will be played on Saturday 21st April from 6pm featuring all the tournament’s best players, with funds raised being donated to the local children's charity Childwatch.

Spectators are welcome to come and see and join in the fun throughout the week. Food and refreshments are available and entrance is free.

Children’s cricket coaching sessions will be held daily by former international Test cricketer Trevor Chappell and a team of expert cricket coaches.
